Dr. Smith grew up in South Carolina where he attended Clemson University and graduated with a degree in microbiology. He attended medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Following medical school, he completed his residency in family medicine at Anderson Memorial Hospital in Anderson, SC where he served as Chief Resident his final year. After residency, he moved to Morganton to join Dr. Plyler at Medical Heights Family Practice which later became Burke Primary Care. Dr. Smith has practiced in Morganton since 1989.
Before locating to Morganton, Dr. Smith married Kim Ervin, a Burke County native. The Smiths have three children and many animals. Dr. Smith enjoys being outdoors and is often doing projects on their farm. He enjoys spending time on the Catawba River and the surrounding mountains. He is an avid reader and enjoys reading many novels throughout the year.
Dr. Smith enjoys many aspects of family medicine and helps with occupational health. He really likes clinical research and oversees several research studies that are run throughout the clinical research department at Burke Primary Care. Dr. Smith likes to help keep Burke Primary Care moving forward in providing services that will help meet the needs of Burke and the surrounding counties. He enjoys office procedures such as laceration repair, mole removals, joint injections like Synvisc and Testopel insertions.
